Zombies, zombies, all over...
What IS this strange obsession that has arisen.. symbolically speaking? If anything, one could argue that Easter is the holiday for zombies, and we have interpreted it just as such.
The game is called Dead Island, although there is no shortage on the zombie-infested survival horrors. And something tells me there will be a great many more shortly inhumed in the personal stash. Will have to check out some movies on the theme as well, and perhaps a famed tv-series. Any tips on good material - gimme a heads-up!
Thugs move about. They are characterized by their bulky stature and their deep and manly, almost animalistic, growling howl. When they shamble towards you, the pricklings of fear appear on exposed skin with a sudden chill, as you realize that impending doom draws closer with a staggering lurch. One realization concerns how closely intertwined humor and horror are. One of the best events in the game is when you have modified a weapon to emit an electrical charge when it hits something (or someone) and you smack it upon the nogging of one of the thug-fellows. The electric boogie he performs then, air-shagging, with his hair on end would rival the best b-boy, I tell you!
Survival horror is the genre. What is the attraction? Vendela is clearly fascinated with the concept, since she takes delight in her own skittish frights. As for me, I think it's quite bothersome to have limited resources, and still not. I mean, either go all the way, or don't. In this game, the bandits have limitless ammunition. At the same time, I hover above the workbench, smacking together bullets from metal scrap and bleach. I could have less of the zombies, perhaps, and more of a strategic battle to survive, with food, water, electricity and other resources being of the essence. But games tend to disappoint me. Perhaps I have expectations that are way too high? I can't help but think that too much attention is put on graphics, and way too little on the playability of the game!
Still, there is an attractive charm to the game, and it does provide a lure with it's simplicity and monotone repetition. The quests are somewhat logical in nature and the game has some visual elements that inspires me to some upcoming photographical sessions - yes, theme Zombie!
And I will have to say something about today's cuisine, as well. Traditionally the zombie meal would of course have to be brains, and yes, I already have some ideas for special Halloween treats, but today was still set on Easter. Main theme today were potatocakes with Philadelphia cream cheese and red onions with some chives. Spread across this was some Norwegian salmon to good effect. Yes, it was a real treat. The late night snack was butterfried toast with lamb and leavened onions with some salad. Fit for a King! Or Zombie! Braaaaaiiiiinssss.....
