6th of August

It WAS surprisingly good, though, the breakfast. There was a tiny bottle with orange juice for each person, which was a nice gesture. A small bowl of yogurt with berries on top, covered in sugar and cardamom (a new one to me, but quite interesting in it's tangy taste!) Cardamom is incidentally the third most expensive spice in the world, following saffron (which everybody knows about) and vanilla (heey!). I just might take up this practice at home - it was THAT good! Some strawberries and home-made pastries and so on made for a really nice breakfast. And there was even a theme amongst the china, even though the chairs still didn't match! All the while, sounds of a raspy old gramophone squeaking out some tunes from the 20s in the dampened background.
The day then carried us over the northern coast of the tormented landscape that is Fårö. There is a small road going along the coastline display rauks, rauks and more rauks. We started out carrying the flag high, but after the first immense site, we just made small touch-down samples and then passed the area with expediency. Enroute to the ferry, we did stop by some interesting places, like the small outpost of choleraepidemics which later turned into a funeral for the sailors quarantined there.
There was a lot more taking place on that day, driving down the east side of Gotland, passing some churches, ruins and finally reaching the destination for the night, a boardinghouse on the west side, just by the sea. Very beautiful, rustic, serene. Felt like something out of a novel or an old monochrome movie. Some pictures will find their way to FlickR later on, with parts of the story for you guys to piece together. We ate dinner that night at Bruna Dörren in Ljugarn, which can be highly recommended. Not very classy, to be sure, but the food was good and you got to sit by the beach.
